Information

Our organ has been built at Orgelbau Raffin in Überlingen to the Bodenlake in Germany.

Gladly I want share my (humble) knowledge with others, because for an organ cranker it is difficult to find the necessary information.

A few addresses where to get punched and/or signed music rolls, I'm willing to supply to supporters. Please mail me your questions. If you have got addresses or tips for me, then please mail these also.

At the right you see an example of how the music roll is placed in the organ. A music roll has got a length of approximately 80 till 90 feet, this is 8 minutes of music. The roll has got a width of 0.36 foot and sits on a plastic reel.

Original Raffin music rolls are made of plasticfoil. These have a longer life span, but there you can obtain paper rolls also and of course you can try to make music yourself. For this your can get software on the Internet with which you can translate your midi-files in circles and then print these on paper. After this you have to spend a 'little' time in punching the circles out of the paper to get holes. Punching one roll can cost you over 10 hours of work (when you are are trained puncher). If you're interested in Midibook for Windows, then surf to the site of P.Paardekam.

Nowadays I have also an innovative manner for backing up organ rolls. When I asked an acquaintance if he could develop something to achieve this, he saw possibilities. After few prototypes he developed an Organ Roll Scanner which uses a webcam. He made a beautiful music roll backup program after several hours of programming. It works perfect. More information about the Organ Roll Scanner, you can get on the site of Dirk's Projects.
